If you are a collector of knives like I am, you understand the importance of knife storage. My blades are irreplaceable to me, and for most collectors, they also hold sentimental value, so it only makes sense to preserve their beauty and longevity for future generations by storing them properly.
Keeping them precise, oiled, dry, and out of the sun is essential for preventing corrosion and extending their lifespan, but how you store them is also crucial. Throwing your cutlery into a drawer and allowing them to become damaged is a poor decision.
Here are several storage options for your extensive cutlery collection:
1. Knife Purse
A knife purse is an excellent option for folders, particularly if you occasionally carry your knives. Zero Tolerance, Benchmade, and Case all manufacture excellent knife storage packs in a variety of sizes.
For scratch-free stowage, bags can be constructed from top-grain leather, vinyl, canvas, and heavy-duty polyester with felt, dense foam padding, and soft cloth linings. Most are equipped with adjustable shoulder straps and zippered or Velcro closures for portability and security, respectively.
2. Protector Cases
Protective cases, similar to those used for firearms, are remarkably effective for storing blades. Well, perhaps it’s not all that remarkable given that they’re designed to hold firearms and other equipment, but cases made from egg crate material retain knives exceptionally well. In addition, many of these cases are lockable, so you need not be concern about children with sticky digits getting inside.
In addition, you can add illumination to achieve the radiance seen on the iconic briefcase from Pulp Fiction.
3. Knife Roll
The knife roll is a space-saving device for preserving blades in a rolled-up bundle that effectively protects your collection from damage.
The majority of rolls have a plush interior lining made of felt, textile, or soft fabric that provides a safe environment. Exteriors may be constructed from PVC, leather, vinyl, canvas, or robust polyester.
4. Knife Case
Knife cases are comparable to knife rolls, but they do not inherently roll up; they resemble briefcases.
These can be quite popular among caterers who frequently travel with their blades.
5. Knife Display Case
For those who prefer to leave their collections at home and never transport them, a knife display case may be necessary. There are numerous options available for selecting a case, but you must first determine the size of the case you require. Do you require a locking case to prevent minors from accessing its contents?
If you’re looking for a compact display case, you can choose a walnut wood case with a glass top for storage and visibility, as well as a touch of elegance and decor for presentation purposes.
6. Tool Cabinet
A popular alternative for knife storage is a tool cabinet. Several companies, including Milwaukee, Craftsman, Husky, and Stanley, manufacture knife cabinets. This has a few disadvantages. First, they can be quite costly. Second, they may be a little too large, but you could use the excess space to store additional equipment.
You can also find quite good tool storage cabinets that are not of the standard metal variety. For instance, if you have the funds and adore blades, you can purchase something from Gerstner & Sons.
7. Safe
Depending on the number of knives you possess, their value, and other factors, a safe may also be a good place to store knives. In addition to protecting your belongings from criminals and your family, a safe can also save your belongings in the event of a fire.
Some safes even feature climate control settings to preserve your belongings in near-perfect condition.
This is not my area of expertise, so I cannot provide a recommendation. I am aware that Liberty manufactures some of the finest firearms safes, which can also be used to store weapons.
8. Stackable Plastic Drawers
This is another prevalent method of storage because it is simple and inexpensive. These plastic compartments won’t do much to protect or conceal your weapons, but they do offer a convenient way to access and store them (and other items).
I will not specify a location, but you can locate them at most big-box retailers or online. You can also add items that will make it slightly better, such as non-slip cushions.
9. Magnetic Knife Strips
I would say that this occurs less frequently with collections and more frequently with culinary blades. A magnetic knife strip is a long, rectangular section of magnetized metal that is designed to retain knives. Rather than a drawer or knife block, this is a common way to store kitchen blades (which can be hard to clean).
Even though it’s simple to purchase multiple strips and place them side by side, one of the issues is that the strips are typically on the diminutive side, necessitating a larger quantity for larger collections. In addition, the blades must be open, and cutlery made from exotic materials such as ceramic and titanium are prohibited.
However, magnetic panels do have some advantages. They can be displayed attractively and are easily accessible. If you carry a different weapon every day, this may be more practical.
10. Go Handmade
There is always the handmade option for those looking for something a little more unique. If you are talented enough to do it yourself, you have my utmost respect. However, if you’re like me and can scarcely build a LEGO house, there’s nothing wrong with hiring a professional.
Bottom Line
Finding the ideal pocket knife storage solution is essential for keeping your cutlery secure, organized, and accessible. Whether you have a large collection of knives or just a few favorites, there are a variety of storage options to accommodate your requirements and preferences.
There are numerous inventive methods to store pocket knives, ranging from simple magnetic strips and blocks to custom-made wooden displays and cases. Remember to select a storage solution that is durable, secure, and suitable for the size and design of your knives.
Consider your own lifestyle and how you intend to utilize your cutlery. Do you require a portable stowage option that can be carried with you? Or, are you seeking a permanent storage solution that can be displayed in your home or workshop?
Finding a storage solution that works for you and your blades is crucial. By doing so, you can ensure that your blades remain in pristine condition and are always available for use.
